A Rainy Day That Changed Everything
It began on a wet Manchester afternoon in November 1985, when a group of former players navigated the corridors of the modern Old Trafford — a very different stadium from the one they once called home. That meeting marked the birth of the first formal ex-players’ association in the UK.
Led by former club captain Billy Foulkes, and later supported by Sir Matt Busby as Patron, the Association set out with a simple aim: keep players connected and support one another beyond their playing days.
A Growing Community of Former Reds
Today, the Association remains in touch with nearly 300 former Manchester United players, spanning multiple eras. From household names to players who simply signed professional forms, every former Red is welcomed. This inclusivity has been a defining principle from day one.
Over the past 39 years, players such as Charlie Mitten, David Herd, Kevin Moran, Alan Gowling, and John Doherty have shaped the Association’s leadership, with Wilf McGuinness later taking up the role of Chairman.
Friendship, Support & Charity at the Heart
Charitable work has always been central to the Association’s mission. Through various events and donations, the AFMUP has contributed over £1 million to local charities, supporting causes across Greater Manchester and beyond.
Events such as the annual Reunion Dinner, the Charity Golf Day, and the Sportsman’s Dinner have become beloved traditions — opportunities to reconnect, reminisce, and raise funds for good causes.
Looking Toward the 40th Year
As the 40th anniversary approaches, the Association continues to honour the values established in 1985: friendship, community, support, and service. With each new year, former players join, new stories are shared, and the legacy grows stronger.
